Walter Murch, in a letter to Roger Ebert, explains that the biggest problem with 3D is the "convergence/focus" issue. The audience must focus at the screen, a plane at a fixed distance away. However, to properly view the screen their eyes must converge at variable distances in front of and behind the screen. We can do it, but it takes a lot of extra work, thus leading to fatigue and/or headaches. (via John Gruber)

Starting at BEACON Thursday

Its OFFICIAL! I will starting work full-time for the new Bio-computational Evolution in Action Consortium (BEACON) at Michigan State University on Thursday this week. Half of my time will be spent developing and supporting computing resources for the center, including web applications and databases. The other half will be focused on developing, extending, and improving the graphical user interface framework for Avida-ED. I am looking forward to it.

As logically follows, Wednesday will be last day working for the MSU Libraries. After six years I have accumulated quite a bit of experience and have appreciated the opportunities and support for my education that the Libraries afforded me. I wish them well.

Although it has apparently been out since mid-summer, I have just learned that Artificial Life Models in Software, Second Edition has been published. In it I have contributed to the revised first chapter that describes the Avida software and several research projects performed using it. The book is available for purchase at Amazon.com, and is even available for the Kindle.

I have decided it is about time I add a little modern flair to my web presence. My plan a couple of years ago had been to build and maintain a static website that would eventually be converted into a custom built dynamic system. I never even stuck to the plan for adding and updating content. Other projects and life events have taken priority, and my site has stagnated.

In an effort to reverse the stagnation, I have decided to implement a WordPress blog. It will hopefully lower the barrier to creating many of the random postings I have contemplated in the past, as well as spur me to transition and update my existing content pages. At the very least it will give me a means to broadcast photos and updates through a syndicated medium, rather than crufty old emails.

So here goes…
